Are you a young economist with a passion for trade policy and international trade cooperation? Do you want to showcase your research skills and win a cash prize of CHF 5,000? If yes, then you should apply for the WTO Essay Award for Young Economists 2024.

The WTO Essay Award is an annual competition organized by the World Trade Organization (WTO) to promote high-quality research on trade policy and international trade cooperation and to reinforce the relationship between the WTO and the academic community.

The award is open to young economists who possess or are engaged in the completion of a PhD degree and, if over 30 years of age, are no more than two years past a PhD defense. The paper submitted for the award must address issues related to trade policy and international trade cooperation and cannot exceed 15,000 words.

The winner of the award will receive a prize of CHF 5,000 and will be officially announced at the annual meeting of the European Trade Study Group (ETSG), the largest conference specializing in international trade. The award ceremony will take place on 12-14 September 2024 at Athens University in Greece. The winning author will also receive funding to attend the meeting.

  • Who can apply for the WTO Essay Award? The award is open to young economists who possess or are engaged in the completion of a PhD degree and, if over 30 years of age, are no more than two years past a PhD defense. In the case of co-authored papers, this requirement shall apply to all authors.

The panel comprises: Professor Beata Javorcik (University of Oxford), Professor Robert Staiger (Dartmouth College), Professor Alberto Trejos (INCAE Business School), and Professor Ralph Ossa (Director, Economic Research and Statistics Division, WTO Secretariat). The selection will be based on the quality, originality, relevance, and policy implications of the paper.
