The program facilitates a three-month ‘Cooperation Visit’ to a German research institute. This initiative aims to foster research collaboration between African and German scientists, potentially leading to more extensive links through other Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) programs.

Financial Support

DFG covers travel expenses and provides subsistence costs for the stay in Germany, ensuring a focus on research and collaboration.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Hold a PhD obtained not earlier than 2019.
  • Be a national of a sub-Saharan African country, including South Africa, and hold a research position there.
  • Applicants already in Germany or with established collaboration with the intended host are not eligible.
  • Women scientists are particularly encouraged to apply.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted via the online portal. Required documents include a scanned copy of your passport and a recent invitation letter from a German host.


The application deadline is 5 June 2024. Visits must be undertaken within 12 months of the award.
